How to get a very old rusted pedal off |
Lead | |
|
Anyone got any tips or tricks on how to get a rusted pedal from a crank ? I removed two very rusted pedals from a Murray Elininator II frame that Eddie generously gave me that was in that pile of parts that he gave away. I soaked them in Evaporust overnight then used this rust penetrating oil called croa oil . It finally penetrated just enough but I really had to put all of my 230 lbs into it . I am trying to get a single pedal off of another frame and so far it will not budge. any ideals ? if worse comes to worse I guess I could use a cutting tool to cut the pedal off but really dont want to do that.

If the pedal is already trashed, I'd cut it off and then drill out the part that's still stuck in the crankarm. Before doing that, you may want to heat it with a torch and try cranking it again.

Take the pedal apart and get it down to the shaft, then slide it out of the frame, thise way the crank and sprocket are off, then remove the sprocket and hardware and toss the crank with the pedal shaft.

i find soaking it in petrol overnite helps to loosen it

If you can get a wrench on it that won't slip put a 3 foot pipe on the wrench. If that won't move it try a 6 foot pipe. LOL That will move just about any bolt.

If this is on that super stock frame, I would just remove the cranks, and sprocket, they are not worth wasting time on since they are common parts. As long as there is only a shaft left you can slide the cranks out with the pedal shaft intact. Save the frame, and the sprocket.

I wasn't really in the mix. LOL When Eddie had the frame he was going to sell it to me. That's as much as I had to do with it. LOL....

If the crank is not that great. Heating it up with a torch will make it easy to remove the pedal. I have even done it without causing alot of damage to the chrome. I am talknig about an Oxy acetelene torch not a butane.
