Like I needed another one, I am now off and running at my first humble attempt at a custom Krate. I didn't want to molest a vintage bike, so I opted for a late re-issue to work with. Your basic BFK, showed up yesterday new in box. Had to put it together real quick (since it was mostly done already) and give it a ride. Awesome! My first passion is air cooled Volkswagens, and at the last camp out there were several vintage and re-issue Stingrays running around. I had to have one.
The basic plan is to incorporate as many old school vintage parts as I can justify. 5 speed hub, Atom front hub, old style reflectors / headlight / tail. Paint will be PPG Rattlesnake, with obnoxious yellow lettering. One of my favorite bikes as a kid was my friend's metallic brown and yellow Scrambler. . . . the yellow part stuck, but the root-beer 'looking' Rattlesnake is to tie into my '60 Singlecab (when it is done too). I've got a set of repro wheelie bars, OG style sissy bar and shocks coming already too. Looking to put early style fenders with the struts on them. Original hand controls on the way, need to sort the brakes. Caliper in rear, Atom up front if I get lucky.
I stripped the bike today, and going to paint this evening. I'll have it re-lettered soon there after. Gonna be the "Gerg Krate". Greg is my real name, gerg is my nickname for the past several years.
Thanks!
