Anyone with tire saving tricks ? |
Lead | |
|
I picked up an original Schwinn Slick I would like to use on a rider, but it has some deep cracks in the sidewall, Now I have heard of using superglue in the cracks, and another one I heard of is using saddle soap to soften it up with duct tape inside the tire, Now I know most of you guys buy NOS if possible but all I can afford is POS

I have heard brake fluid will loosen up a tire and make cracks close up, but have not tried it. Plus brake fluid is not good on paint.

Ozone is the killer of bike tires
|
Ozone is the killer of bike tires. I once bought about 12 brand new "GTX 442 Groove Tread" slick tires, 20x2.125. From a bike shop in the 1980's. Everyone of them (except one) disintegrated shortly after I mounted them. I still have the one that didn't go bad. I know of no way to restore old tires. I would buy and use a modern tire for actual road use, and save the old tires for show. The Carlisle slick and Krate 16 inch front tire that I bought new in the 70's are both disintegrating too, and they have virtually no miles on them.
Old tires will eventually go bad. You will occasionally find good ones for some miraculous reason, but its usually a fluke. I'm sure you can get re-pops of the old Schwinn Slik tires. John B. |

Most tires will evntually disintergrate with age

Most old ties will evntually disintergrate. It made me think of the original Krate Superior 16" color line front tires that sometimes go for over $1200. I think I would be a little upset if I had bought one of those tires and it later disintergrated. I guess that would be a bad investment.

with all this talk of tires why doesn't someone (Ron...) make new sliks for the schwinns and like bikes? There has to be a market to the collectors. Right?

Once they're cracked, that's it. There's no recovering old rubber.
You need to preserve them when you first get them. Talcum powder. Use it liberally, but use a mask to avoid inhaling. Talcum powder also helps enormously when you're installing the tubes, it helps minimize friction. Beside sunlight, keep any petroleum, oil, and grease off rubber, it accelerates the deterioration. |

Not sure if its the same thing but I picked up a 55 Buick about a year ago and it had early radial white walls on it from around 1974 or at least that's when the inspection expired. I sprayed them with Pam Cooking spray and after about 5 applications the tire stayed a deep black and I didn't have to put air in it every 2 weeks. If kept going with it it might actually swell them up to where they seal like good tires. Id never drive on them for real but at least I am not firing up the compressor 2 or 3 times a week when I have to move the car. Also on a Lincoln mark 8 I have the rubber on the air ride suspension started to dry out and leak over night so I bought "food grade" silicone spray and hosed the air ride bags down. The first few applications the rubber just absorbed it with in 30 mins they almost felt dry to the touch and the bags got a little darker black, I kept repeating it until they seemed like slippery with silicone and they've lasted a few years so far. Here's a site that has what I bought so you know what it is http://www.amazon.com/gp/...d_r=188T4K9GYK2N7AG6F7SA

I have a bunch of new 24 and 26 inch tires for my kustom bikes, I intend to get some of those big clear grabage bags to put them in, to keep the ozone away. What else is there to do? I don't know.

If I find a 'good' tyre, coat it in Talk, put a tube in (partially inflated) add a few packets of SILICA gel on top it, then wrap the whole thing in Saran wrap (we call it Glad Wrap here in Oz) then i keep em in a box out of sun light..
It may not be the answer, seems to work for me, and Hey! It doesn't hurt to try :) |
