Hello everyone.
I'm hoping to get lots of responses to this thread.The people who know me know that I have been working on breaking the serial numbers on the Murray built bikes for quite a while.A number of people have contributed in the past.Any and all 20" , 20"x16" , 24"x20" ' 24"x24" serial numbers are what I need.Boys or girls bikes.Any frame style.Please fill free to add any Murray serial numbers to the list.Give a detailed description of the bike including head badge name and chain guard name if any and pics if possible.I have quite a few to add myself.
The basic Murray serial number is like this: M95280X69000000.It usually has 15 digits.Sometimes there is a blank spot or a "." instead of a digit.Some Murray built bikes, such as those badged for Sears, have a different serial number arrangement.Sears bikes serial number start with 502.Those badged for Gambles start with a WG.The Mark II Eliminator frame style was badged for many different companies as well but it also had a slightly different serial number arrangement.At times,there will be a few discrepencies I'm sure.I have seen a few.If you are afraid to post the complete serial number,at least post the first nine digits please.These 9 digits tell the story for your particular bike.Using the example that I gave above,
M = Murray
9 = 1969
5280 = Murray badged F5 Eliminator (F5 = 5 speed)
X69 = a special model for that year
Thank you for your participation.Kenny.
