One guy's opinion.... | ||
|
Well, I know this won't win me the popularity contest but I gotta say it; These Iversons are the ugliest "muscle bikes" I've ever seen!
Murray, Schwinn, Huffy, Columbia, Ross, Raleigh, etc. seemed to get it. Were the Iversons built in some far away land with limited daylight where they had nothing to compare them to to get an idea of what looked good???? Were people afraid to tell George Barris, the "King of Customizers" that perhaps these weren't his best work? I see some cool parts, (drum brake, messinger seat and pad, rotary shifter, etc.) but the frames and chainguards have been beaten with the ugly stick front to back!! George Barris must've exhausted all his creative ability on the Monkee's GTO and the Batmobile, cuz his talent sure isn't evident in these eyesores..... Go ahead, let me have it. I've asked for it..... |

Ugly is Cool! | ||

Sometimes Ugly is Cool, look at James Brown,,,,, Look at a early B body Mopar (such as a early Dodge Dart),,,, Look at the Mona Lisa (what a bow-wow)
I like the weird and abnormal bikes they made. I like the SS5 but some say the Columbia SS bikes were not all that pretty of a bike, they were a little freakish looking and if it wasn't for the chopper fork they would have no made the cut. Sometimes ugly is cool! This isn't the Schwinn Forums Bob, we don't send you ticking hate mail because you don't like our bikes!

I knew that would get ya Ron!
Ya know, I had a co-worker over the house who had no idea that I collected bicycles. There in my livingroom sat my most prized SS5 childhood bike. As we walked into the room he really didn't have time to think what he was saying, (probably not cool to insult someone's chidhood keepsake when actually standing in their house with them). We stopped in front of it and he says, "man, that is the ugliest bike I've ever seen!". When he realized what he just blurted out, he tried to back pedal with something. I stopped him and said hey, if it wasn't my childhood bike I'd probably think it was ugly too. To each their own, right? Truth be told, next to that Manta thing I built, my SS bike looks like a brick, and that's comin' from a guy that loves these praying mantis looking SS bicycles. For what it's worth Ron if I'm keeping track, that's like 48 bikes you've got that I think are awesome, and one that.....well........ |

Ya know, I saw an Iverson like yours at Jim Barnards place. It might've been a five speed though. It had the seat and pad like yours but it looked like
they painted either the edge or center, (can't remember which) orange to match the bike. I think he said it was the most he'd ever spent on a bicycle,
(and MAN, he's got a lot of 'em!) He was beaming when he showed it to me. I didn't really get it, but the look on his face told me that he DID get
it and loved the darn thing. I think he's since had it signed be George Barris. I remember seeing another Barris bike too, perhaps an Iverson, called a
"Diablo". It had a real long banana seat and mag wheels front and rear. Can't remeber the color though. They are unique, I'll give ya that.
At the end of the day, it'll look great in your collection. I can't think of another bike that color, so now your candy-apple-colored-rainbow must be complete, no?? Now about that ugly SS5 comment.............. |

Psychocircuscycles wrote:You're kidding........right? As a 60's kid, I can tell you that anything with wheels that was designed or touched by George Barris was considered unrivaled on the coolness scale. The early Dragstrippers possessed the highest cool ratings of all of the muscle bikes. The Iverson rotary shifter was a pure example of the novel trickery exhibited on many of the dashboards of the 60's cars of that period. The odd seat added a wild "dragster" impression. And, of course, the "Day-Glo" paint was pure psychedelic. Groovy Perfection. Dig it. Sorry Guys, but my early Iversons are all in deep storage. I've got a later black 5-speed Dragstripper in the garage, and a nice orange '69 Dragger at the house, but I think you've seen them before. Here is the only picture I have of the orange Dragger, sitting behind the Stinger Mark II and in front of the Streeter 5.

Wow! I missed a lot on this post. OK Bob, you asked for it!! lol You and I know you are a man of taste but Jack is right, are you kidding me? LOL Barris
was and still is THE MAN!! So much the Man that Jim flew with all his Iverson chainguards all the way to LA and paid the man to sit and talk to him about
bikes and ink his John Hancock or is that George Barris onto all the guards he took with him! Now that is the love YOU, Bob, should be feeling for these
Iversons!! Ron is right, they are so ugly you gotta love them. Kinda of like my 1970 Dodge Super Bee, so ugly it's cool. Eddie, what's wrong with a
Superbird wing? Have all my friends in this hobby ganged up on me this time? HA HA this made me laugh, it's all in good fun.
BTW Bob, SS bikes are so ugly that I love 'em too!! I will be reassembling the blue 3 speed again and will be sure to post pix here. Thanks again for your help on that one although it's been years. You're still da man!! Mark

Here I am thinkin' my buddies in the hobby think the SS bikes are cool. I let one teeny, tiny, teeny weenie comment about these Iversons out and......"oh those SS bikes are the ugliest bikes in the
world", "they scare small children", "I keep mine in the attic to scare the mice away"!!!! Well, that's it,
I'm throwing them all to the curb tonight for trash pickup in the morning. Anybody know where I can find an Iverson???????
