That is an odd thing with your serial number. I have over 30 bikes on my list so far and they all have 17 numbers and letters in the serial numbers. Some numbers have a dash in the middle, some don’t.  Here are some examples:

1977 Murray Fire Cat  - M07 005810S0864050
1978 Murray King Kat - M08 005820T2054865
1977 Murray/All Pro (Kmart) Fire Cat - M07 5810-12S1610219
1977 Murray/Whites Fire Cat - M07 5810-47S1600218

Based on what I’ve seen so far, I was expecting that your bike might have a ‘U’ after the ‘55’. This is based on the fact that all of the 1977 model year bikes have an ‘S’ in the middle and the 1978 bikes have a ‘T’ in the middle, so I figure that ‘U’ would stand for 1979.  I am still trying to figure out what the last 7 digits stand for, but I’m thinking that last 4 or 5 digits are the running production numbers/qty for the model year.  I believe that on the bikes with a dash after the model number, those 2 digits after the dash are the store chain that the bike was sold in.  On the bike listed above, the ‘12’ is for Kmart (All Pro) and the ‘47’ is for Whites.  On my list are also some Fire Cats with ‘55’ and ‘56’ but I don’t know those store chains yet.

With all of those numbers missing off your bike, could it be some sort of prototype or maybe a factory mistake that they didn’t stamp the complete serial number?  Who knows?
